Brick Wall Down, Stud Wall Up ...

and ... hey presto! we have a utility/laundry room.
.
If you can be bothered referring all the way back to the plans on one of our original postings, you will see that we had a separate bathroom and toilet. A wall separated the loo from the kitchen.
.
We knocked it down - after moving the W.C. to its new location in the old bathroom, having ripped out the rotted unit that was holding up the whb/sink and was, no doubt, harbouring billions of germs.
.
Meanwhile, Christmas came and went (we went too - spent Christmas elsewhere!), then we built another wall 3ft into the kitchen, thus creating a small (6ft) laundry/utility room. The photo shows the view from the kitchen - you can see the gas boiler on the wall and a temporary mobile pantry-unit! (note the yellow and pink walls - and the electrics! H&S nightmare!)
.
I should clarify that when I say 'we' that means Del and Tone - with a little encouragement from the paymasters.

Hello 'The Bees' - and thanks for your comment on the Worst House blog!

You asked about our sliding folding doors - they're from Scandinavian Window Systems. I have mixed feelings about them to be honest. They look lovely, and do the job brilliantly, with impressive standards of Scandi insulation, but they cost an awful lot of money (about 6.5K) because each set is custom made (plus they're timber rather than PVC). I wasn't that impressed with the care standards at the firm - I had a two architects liaising on my behalf and they were still about three months late with the order, despite demanding full payment up front. I've heard similar things about some of the other specialist firms that do them though - I think it's partly because lots of them are imported so there are more variables.

So - if I was buying them again I'd think about shopping around more and perhaps trying to get off the peg ones to suit a standard size if there was any chance at all of doing it that way. (I have to avert my eyes when I see similar looking things for about a sixth of the price in Wickes or wherever...!)

Good luck with you renovation - how's it all going?

As an addendum, there has been increasing availability of sliding-folding or bi folding doors in the past three and a half years; there are a few more UK manufacturers but also a vast increase in cheap imports. The number of agents/ installers has grown, too, and the choice of retractable doors is no longer restricted to timber, pvc or aluminium bi folds.

SunSeeker Doors has been manufacturing state of the art retractable doors since 2003. Our Slimline bi folds remain popular and are sold alongside our innovative newer, door systems, UltraSlim and Frameless Glass retractable sliding doors (or 'slide-pivot' doors). All our doors are made to measure, are of good quality, are much cheaper than the Scandi price mentioned and will be made and installed in under a month.
